Erlicheer Summer Daffodils
Narcissus Division 4, Double Flowered Daffodils
About:
Daffodils, or Narcissus, are in the Amaryllis family and are native to Europe, North Africa and Asia. Although usually planted in the fall, Erlicheer is double variety that you can plant in the spring or fall. Spring-planted bulbs will bloom in the summer the first year, returning again in spring in subsequent years in zones 6-10. The fragrant, pristine white flowers with buttery yellow accents make excellent bouquets. Note: do not mix daffodils with other flowers in bouquets, as the sap will cause other flowers to wilt.
Planting:
Plant 6” deep and 6” apart with the narrow “necks” pointing up. Daffodils are tolerant of most soils with good drainage, but do best in deep, rich soil with plenty of organic matter. Plant in an area that gets full to part sun.
Maintenance:
Feed annually in the spring with a bulb fertilizer. Water as needed and do not allow the soil to dry out during the spring. Daffodil bulbs are drought tolerant after the foliage begins to die back. Do not cut back foliage after blooming. The bulbs need it to replenish their energy supply for next year’s blooms. Plant among other bulbs and perennials to conceal the unattractive foliage after blooming. The foliage may be cut back when it yellows.
Over-wintering:
Erlicheer daffodils are hardy in USDA zones 6-10 and will bloom again the following spring. Apply a layer of mulch for further winter protection. In colder zones, they are treated as annuals and will not return.
