Butterfly Flowers Mixture
Asclepias tuberosa
About:
Butterfly flowers are native to the U.S. and are in the Asclepias family, which is known for attracting butterflies to their nectar-rich flowers. Our butterfly flower mixture contains plants that will produce two inch flower heads in orange or yellow. Butterfly flowers are very beneficial for wildlife and are actually threatened or endangered in some northeastern states. The flowers will mature into clusters of canoe-shaped seedpods, which are great for dried flower arrangements.
Planting:
Plant the crown, the place where the shoots and the roots meet, level with the soil surface and 24-36” apart. Butterfly flowers have a high drought tolerance and do best in well-drained, sandy soil. Plant in a sunny location, where they can grow undisturbed.
Maintenance:
Butterfly flowers self sow freely. Remove spent flowers if you do not want volunteer seedlings, and also to encourage continued blooming.
Over-wintering:
Butterfly flowers are quite hardy and do not require any special care.
