Astilbes Mixture
Astilbe chinensis
About
Astilbes are in the Saxifrage family and native to Asia and North America. They are hardy perennials that do best in shady spots with consistent moisture. Our mixture contains plants that will bloom in feathery plumes of pink, red or white over glossy, fern-like foliage. Good choice to bring color to shady spots.
Planting:
Plant the crown, the place where the shoots and the roots meet, level with the soil surface. Astilbes do best in rich, organic, well-drained soil in areas that get at least partial shade. They look best planted in groups and do well in borders. Their love of moisture makes them a good choice for pond edges.
Maintenance:
Astilbes are heavy feeders and will benefit from regular applications of a fertilizer high in nitrogen. They require consistent moisture. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture. Water deeply during hot, dry spells to prevent the plant from wilting and dying back. You may choose to deadhead spent flower stalks after blooming, or leave them to provide an ornamental effect in the winter.
Over-wintering:
Astilbes are hardy and over-winter well. In colder areas, it will help to mulch for added protection. In the spring, remove last year’s remains before new growth emerges.
